Life can feel crazy and it just got crazier in the last 6 weeks. We are all having to stay home and only leave for things that are essential. It is hard not to get caught up in the uncertainty of not knowing what’s next and the lack of control in our lives. This can be very challenging. And with the heightened stress and uncertainty, it is so easy to get caught up in trying new things or distracting ourselves with TV, alcohol, food, social media and all those things that suddenly need to be done around the house. There is nothing wrong with these things in moderation, but we should not use them as an excuse to hide from the fear and other feelings that can arise.
This is where our personal yoga practice can help us to ground, centre, and nourish. It is not always easy. In fact, sometimes there seems to be every excuse to not roll out the yoga mat. But if we really want to help ourselves, we need to get on the mat.
This space is where we can learn. This space opens us up to enquiry. The mindfulness and flow from our yoga practice can help with the challenges we are all facing. Perseverance and patience will let feelings arise, flow and fall away. Be mindful of the feelings and thoughts as they arise, acknowledging them, letting them go, and coming back to the practice. Focus on the breath… in and out. Concentrate on the posture being held, transition into the next one, maintain focus on the breath. A state of flow will happen as you concentrate, breathe, focus, and work in those challenging areas between the ease and effort of the practice. The best thing is we don’t need to go and discover new asanas or pranayama techniques. Instead, dive deeper into the practices you already know and use them to teach you about yourself.
We may find a connection to others and the world. We may find deep relaxation. We may feel safer and more in control. Our practice will cultivate compassion and wisdom, help us be comfortable in ourselves, and lead us to understanding that nobody is alone. We are all inter-connected. We are all caught up in the same fear. Practice, practice, practice – and suddenly you will change without knowing you are changing or trying to change. Our yoga practice will become something we cherish and will help us centre and feel grounded. Then take these lessons beyond the mat.
Go on, what are you waiting for… there is no better time than now to learn to live your yoga practice!
With love,
Tim
