I think we can all agree that yoga is generally beneficial. Studies have shown that yoga not only supports us physically, but can have a positive effect on all aspects of our lives, including emotionally, mentally and energetically.
However, there is also the fallacy that yoga is only for the fit, flexible or young , which is not the case. At YogaHara we have classes for every body.
Chair yoga is just one of our various kinds of classes. And although it is perfectly suited to older people, it is for anyone who feels a gentler, supported class would suits them better ie; if you are recovering for illness or have limited ability to get up and down from the floor.
Here are 5 reasons why chair yoga might be a good option for you.
5 Benefits of Chair Yoga at YogaHara
Builds Strength. Being stronger as we age will help us to navigate our daily lives more independently.
Improved Coordination. This is particularly helpful in helping us to prevent falls.
Maintain or improve mental clarity. Being calmer and more relaxed may lead to a greater sense of happiness and wellbeing.
May assist with pain management. Moving gently can help to relieve some common aches and pains associated with a more sedentary lifestyle.
May help you sleep better. Good sleep is crucial for healing and recovery, plus sleeping better makes you feel better.
Our Chair Yoga classes are great for older students and those with mobility concerns. They include gentle movements that develop strength, flexibility and balance, and mindful breathing that can help you manage pain and stress. By using a chair you can learn to move with confidence and comfort. Chair Yoga may include seated, standing and lying movements depending on your ability.
Kathryn is our chair yoga teacher and she specialises in working with seniors.
Our chair yoga is on Wednesday mornings at 10.30am.
